I was playing around with 2 target dps from a page or two ago and notice something interesting on FD. If I only replaced Black Arrow with Explosive Trap, I got more dps on a single target (about 450, or 2%ish with my gear). In the OP, Esoth mentions that ET ticks every 2 seconds for 20 seconds (10 ticks), and BA ticks every 3 for 15 (5 ticks). LnL has a 12% chance to proc off each tick. So that should mean that the chance of BA proccing LnL is 1 - (.88)^5 = 47.2%. The chance of ET proccing LnL should be 1 - (.88)^10 = 72.1%.
I went to the training dummy to test it out. I fired BA on cooldown, and when it procced LnL, I fired 1 ES only. Did the same for ET.

So with BA, 20 shots, 9 procs (27 ticks of ES). Proc rate of 45%
With ET, 20 shots, 14 procs (42 ticks of ES). Proc rate of 70%
I didn't feel the need to do more testing, as I was just making sure it lined up with the math, which it did. So now you have to put a value on what the extra LnL procs are worth. BA did 310k with its 20 shots, and ET did 238k. That means you are 70k in the hole using ET. However, just shooting 1 shot from the LnL proc results in 100k more damage when using ET. Without getting into any other convoluted math, I am guessing LnL procs are worth about 2 ES (you get 2 extra ES shots, and you probably push back your regular ES a bit, since you have to fit in 4.6 seconds of ES-CS-ES-AS before you get to your regular ES). Even if it is only worth 1.8, that makes the ET test I did do 130k more damage.
There are three things to note if you are going to take BA out of your rotation in favor of ET though
1. Only 1 hunter per raid can do this, ETs don't overlap.
2. You will need to be quick about loading up your trap shooter and targeting the ground.
3. You might occasionally have to push back your ET cast. BA runs out in 15 seconds, and the cooldown is 24 seconds, so you never have overlap. ET takes a second to trigger after you put it down, and runs for 20 seconds. During my testing, there were a couple of times where the LnL proc came with 3 seconds left on the ET cooldown, meaning I would have had to push back the next ET in order to get a full LnL cycle in.
All this sounds optimal and was the way it was done during 4.0.1 where you couldn´t afford enough focus to use BA on CD or refresh SrS, as it meant a 25 focus save per cycle (glyphed trap launcher). But in practice it is too risky to be usable in anything but tank&spank fights. There is a lot of things that can go wrong for a marginal DPS increase.
On the other hand, many times you will want to use your trap CD for aoe situations, even pushing it for a few/Several seconds waiting for that AOE moment that might be critical.
