    • Forum Rules (Updated 3/22/14)   07/14/10

Welcome to the Elitist Jerks forums, a WoW discussion forum targeted towards topics regarding high-end raiding and analysis of game mechanics. We ask you to take a few minutes to read the following before making use of these forums.   First, a point of clarification. The name of these forums is not intended ironically; we have high standards for the discussion that occurs herein, and we're quite unapologetic about it. If you feel our rules are stupid or arbitrary, we don't really care. If you don't wish to follow them, you're welcome to return to the official Blizzard forums.   Following is a brief listing of our forum rules; note that it is by no means exhaustive, as in our experience people are quite innovative in finding new ways to be stupid. These are simply a set of guidelines to get you started in the right direction. If you follow them, you will generally do fine here; however, if you concoct some creative new form of stupidity, our moderators feel no need to restrain themselves in letting you know. All posters are to make an effort to communicate clearly. In particular, all posts should be made in a reasonable approximation of proper English. We realize that a significant number of you are not native speakers, and we do not expect perfection: merely effort. Please obey basic rules of capitalization and punctuation, avoid chatroom abbreviations ("lol", "imo", "u", and the like), and pay at least minimal attention to sentence and paragraph structure. This includes not starting a new paragraph for each sentence. All opinions should be stated as succinctly as possible. Do not make multiple consecutive posts; rather, multi-quote and include all your ideas in a single post. Do not quote huge blocks of text to add a short reply; instead, quote only what you need to to make your point. Do not break a single quoted reply into multiple blocks; doing so needlessly lengthens your post without aiding its readability. And don't provide unnecessary backstory: if it isn't relevant to the question you're asking or the point you're making, we don't need to know about it. All discussion should be both polite and civil. Trolling or flaming in any form is forbidden. Just because someone disagrees with you does not mean they are stupid or on drugs and their personal hygiene isn't really relevant to the discussion. Regardless of the merit (or lack thereof) of your argument, it should be made in a way that is neither insulting nor condescending. Whining in any form is forbidden. Blizzard is not incompetent or stupid and they are not intentionally screwing you over and neither is anyone else. If all you're going to do is complain, don't bother posting. Threads should be started if and only if there is some reasonable topic to discuss. If the issue you wish to discuss is covered in an existing thread, use it rather than creating a new one. If you are asking a simple question that you expect to have a simple answer, ask it in one of the "Simple Questions/Simple Answers" threads. But if you feel there is a topic of discussion not well-covered by existing threads, feel free to start a new thread to discuss it. Some sub-forums restrict new members from creating new topics unless they've made at least 10 approved posts, to prevent spamming or bad posts. If you really think it deserves a new thread before you have 10 posts, contact a moderator with your post content. Do not post unless you have something new and worthwhile to say. Do not bump, quote for truth, cross-post, or post only to say thanks. We don't want to hear your funny story about something that happened in your raid last night, your baseless speculation is unproductive, and your idea for a new ability really isn't that interesting. We don't care what gear you are hoping to get or just received. If you have an idea you'd like to share with the community, support it with analysis, testing, or both that indicates you've put some thought into it. (Note: Posting of a new untested spec falls under this rule, unless you have done the grunt work and have information to support your amazing new spec don't even bother posting it here.) Do not beg for hand-holding. These are forums for discussion and analysis, not for answering any question that you might happen to dream up. Search and read before posting--do not post a question unless you are fairly confident that the answer isn't widely known or easily attainable. In particular, we do not want to take a look at your armory or WWS to tell you what you're doing wrong and we're not interested in making your tough gear or spec decisions for you. We expect you to use the search function and also to read the first post as well as the last 5 pages of the thread you are posting in. Chances are your question has already been answered. Additionally, do not post asking for confirmation of a simulation result. If you think there is a problem with the Sim you are welcome to PM the author. All accounts must have a valid WoW profile. If you no longer play and have deleted all characters you used to have, you may select the "No WoW Account" option; otherwise, this information must be filled out for your main character. If you fail to observe this rule you'll be permanently banned from our forums. We do not permit anonymous posting. Do not sign your posts. People can see who you are from the profile printed to the left of each post, so signing your posts is redundant and simply takes up space. Similarly, you do not need to link your armory in your post, as if people wish to see it they can get it from your profile. Do not respond to terrible posts. Do not respond to a blatantly awful post (a post that is in clear violation of the rules) either in an attempt to moderate them or to answer a question they posed. Your post will just be warned/infracted and removed with the post you are replying to. If you feel that a post is in violation of these rules, please report it and the moderators will deal with it as we feel is appropriate. No Advertising. Do not make posts solely for the purpose of advertising your site/blog/twitch/etc. You may post such things if it's relevant and adds to discussion at hand. If you have information to share, share it here with a link back to your blog or whatever. Do not post "I have information, come to my site to get it". That will result in an immediate infraction and post removal. Also, we will remove any link to a site that violates a games TOS/EULA such as gold selling sites.

If you violate a forum rule, you will receive an infraction. Most infractions are worth one point, although we reserve the right to give you more at any time if we feel you deserve them. If you accumulate too many infraction points, you will receive an automatic (usually temporary) ban which revokes your posting privileges, as follows: 3 Points - 1 Day 5 Points - 3 Days 8 Points - 1 Week 10 Points - 1 Month 15 Points - Permanent

Familiarize yourself with The Banhammer, an archive of all infractions given by the moderators here; it will give you some examples of what not to do. Also feel free to take a gander over The Dung Heap, which will give you a good idea of what these forums would look like if we weren't such jerks.   Thank you for joining the discussion!
    • Site Maintenance (Updated 11-12-15)   10/01/15

Site has been updated to IPS as of 12 November Known Issues So Far: Old wowhead "item" tags are depricated. They may be re-added to fix some issues with older guides, but for most part it's better to just use the modern wowhead.js which auto parses actual wowhead links automatically into tooltips/names. Just post wowhead links in guides and the js will do the rest. You don't need a special BB code for items. Old article links will be broken do to IPS 4 changing url path to remove some pointless "/_/" directory. The articles are still there and can be found in guides menu. You just may not be able to click links from any threads linking to them without editing out the "/_/" part of url. I'll fix most of this little by little when more important stuff is taken care of. External links/google search results may run into same problem. That will just rely on waiting for google to reindex new paths. After you login, you may be thrown to an error page saying page cannot be found if you logged in from the forum index. Harmless though. Just click "forums" and you'll get forum index since redirect after login is busted. The benefactors bar seems to hang/timeout sometimes.

  1. Thread of Ultimate Stupidity

Hunter cross class synergy test request: Data from own live testing with (Destruction unfortunately)- spec warlock and Survival Hunter synergy effects post 4.1 are inconclusive at best. Current logs suggest (using stable autoshot range as baseline for comparison, current logs are muddied by actual gear, next edit to correct oversight) some Survival non-physical damage is still displaying a +/- benefit of roughly 9% benefit from parses with the Dark Intent active and stacking due to deliberate multiple target DoTs on 85 raid target dummies, but surprising is that some periodic abilities like Explosive trap remain within standard variations, while Cobra and Arcane shots are displaing the benefit range concurrent with Dark Intent's tooltip despite classification as Direct damage (although Nature and Arcane spell schools respectively) Please assist with enlargement of data pool for solid confirmation or disproof at minimum, also easily apparent was survival hunter's ability to sustain a full stack (on warlock of course) in a multiple target situation with minimal multishot spreading on serpent on as few as 3 target situations. From the perspective of your self-buff dps outcome seekers: great news! Have yet to find someone more experienced for the raidbuff dps outcome of the pairing, given that my current sim tool (Simcraft) only factors the hunter - warlock Dark Intent bond as mutual base haste buffing. Before approaching source of the tool I'd appreciate a larger and more refined data sample than a 10 minute sample in actual gearing levels of a mid to low progression guild. Sadly, my server is almost totally dead theorycraft wise with notable exception of protection paladin named Vexryn, but of little use for testing this situation. Summary of Post: kindly link or email logs of Survival Hunter- Warlock live data in variable situation, no raidbuffs or consumables please in current sample. (kemanorel2358@gmail.com is my data dump email) I know both classes can potentially benefit much from the continued effects in some situations that lack reliable fire mages, balance druids, and shadow priests, so in large part this test sample's audience is 10 man raiding, although last check showed post 4.1 survival #1 ranking on world of logs to clearly show tendency toward viable interaction between Dark Intent stacks and damage output graph. Also, any experienced with Worldoflogs.com and their expression editor, feel free to pass along your analysis skills regarding stacks of the secondary effect and the resulting benefit.
  2. @Hirgux: Assuming survival attempt for solo onyxia for the aoe for the whelps, if Misdirect alone fails to pick up the full whelp spawn, try pre-laying explosive on one whelp cave's mouth, snake on the other, MD before any eggs hatch, quickly Multishot each pack once to ensure both are safely serpent spread misdirecting to pet, then follow through by feigning death, any adds missed by the massive aoe misdirect tag should default to pet aggro solely based on it being the only viable target on the threat table for their proximity aggression. Also, times like these truly are a favorite for the Cardboard Assassin belt tinker or in theory a Target dummy type engineer gadget. If you're also a Leatherworker like myself, Caverns of Time honored reputation nets a pattern for still un-level capped Drums of Panic for a extremely short duration 5 target aoe fear similar to Psychic Scream, but 2 second duration and target limitation make this extremely situational at best, given that any engineer grenades (but not the cataclysm bolt gun) will also share its cooldown. And traditional: All else fails, kite! Hopefully not duplication: Use of camoflauge mechanic in the start of a semi-viable solo strategy to hunter farm chaos orb drops: Heroic Blackrock Caverns is "gated" only in the sense that there are obviously currently impassable masses of the evolved (read: shadowstrike using) adds. Why can a hunter bypass them easily? The logic is simple, but untested post-4.1... Camoflauge is an aggression-triggering radius reduction to effective zero rather than a true "Stealth" effect while moving, negating the benefit of these or many other (ancient core hounds confirmed also) "stealth sight" possessed npc's to fail to trigger, assuming you don't acutally step on the toes of one. For this example, while under camoflauge's effect, simply jump onto and run along both sections left-hand guardrails. In the poorly planned event of an unexpected add aggression, feign death, then simply wait for camoflauge to come off cooldown, and use the camo cast as your feign-breaking action. You can literally have an add standing on your character's feigning model reset and fail to re-triggger by doing this. Note: some, especially older or named, also rarely certain elite or higher npc's will not ever fail to resist feign death or reset. EVER. Kind of like the way you're still a viable caustic slime target for chimaeron while feigned, among other things like most targeted boss ablities. In the example at hand of Heroic Blackrock Caverns: since a minimum Karsh Steelbreaker kill is required to trigger the Raz event for the elites at the final boss, currently use this mostly for bad pugs who fail to chains or beam bosses and/or save time for guildmates, any player arriving in Karsh Steelbreaker's room will trigger the activation of the teleport to the entrance as if Corla had been defeated, and killing him while skipping Beauty has yet to fail the scripted clearing of the elites gating Ascendant Lord Obsidious

Has anyone who is used to an older addon by name of "Snowfall Keypress" or its family of similar UI mods of past usage have a comparison to the current default UI option in the patch? Thank you for confirmation Tobin, edit inbound to de-clutter thread also, and forgive my lack of attention to detail on this.
  4. Thread of Ultimate Stupidity

In regards to 4.1 update to AI targeting, after growing accustomed to a /startattack line from days gone past in cobra and steady macros, transition has been un-noticed. Can someone update the survival math regarding 4.1 changes to Dark Intent? Personal live testing (unbuffed, 359/372 gearing and I believe Destruction spec warlock on an 85 raider dummy is conflicting with Simcraft's data regarding the buff. In question is an apparent benefit to non-physical damage versus a pure base haste benefit model. Please confirm/deny I"m not very math skilled)

#showtooltip scatter shot /cast [nomod] scatter shot /stopmacro [nomod] /cast [modifier:shift][target=focus, exists, nodead] scatter shot modify for wyvern as needed and voila. on alot of my keybinds i have not only shift but alt and sometimes control mods as well. pve macro thread on ej is win.
  6. Thread of Ultimate Stupidity

btw anyone know if scatter resets dr on freezing? or vice versa? be worth knowing. any other dr resets on our cc would be helpful imo. (dr= diminishing returns)
  7. Thread of Ultimate Stupidity

why we get frost trap, wing clip, and concussive shot just don't stop running imo. and have your healer cc him too if charge stun is too bad for u. disengage is handy, esp with wing clip macro'd to it. running in circles of frost trap's edge > 1 dr cc from freezing in alot of situations. #showtooltip disengage /cast [target, exists, nodead] wing clip /cast disengage proabably a better macro and you could shift the wing clip line to /cast [target=focus, exists, nodead][target, exists, nodead] wing clip to focus the melee chasing you while u burn his heals as well.
  8. Thread of Ultimate Stupidity

WTB res for pets please! ^ above is quoted from page 2 of thread lost code to make it appear so ferocity pet can spec into Heart of the Phoenix - Spell - World of Warcraft but you lose too much utility for it to be viable in arena unless you're running a burst comp and probably still only worth it as bm. btw put it on your bar when pet bar fades as it dies
  9. Thread of Ultimate Stupidity

explain how serpent > chimera > aimed > readiness > chimera > aimed > is not effective burst with rapid fire and racial up please. if their heal is los and they dont have full resil gear that usually gets even plate to killshot range. in my experience most ppl don't survive killshot (good naming of ability)
  10. Thread of Ultimate Stupidity

bm is semi viable in 2s with druid(at low rating tier at least) , but you're trading endurance and scatter for burst and second cc. note: if you're not cc when u trigger bestial wrath in 2s you're doing it wrong imo unless you're aiming for beastcleave lusting burst dps. popping bw to break a cd is great counter move alot of ppl don't expect (only works with "the beast within" talent The Beast Within - Spell - World of Warcraft which every bm hunterr should have anyway. missing it is like being marks w/o chimera, aimed, or readiness) played blood dk / bm as alternate with same raidbuff complement as enh/ bm was pretty good at low rank esp when he used hysteria on my pet during bestial wrath. or me with berzerking and rapid fire. o what fun.
  11. Thread of Ultimate Stupidity

ok first my comp. i've played tree/mm up to 1280 without much trouble aside from double fear fear/banish or silence/fear comps (hate priests, locks. and of course rogues) but don't have any idea for 3s or 5s. spec is pretty standard marks pvp w/ scatter and entrap. found a decent work around to healer being cc w/ hots purged which i'll discuss shortly. other comp thats rough in 2s for us is mage/ele sham just cant blow up one while keeping other cc long enough and its only comp that consistently outburns hots even if i deterrence inital lava burst/mirror image opener which is most common. pet choice at the moment is spider for web and mana regen talent spec on my armory The World of Warcraft Armory - Kemanorel @ Stormscale - Profile should have my pvp spec as secondary. gear is best in slot w/o having rating pieces. trinket: was running the 153 resil pvp trink with Whispering Fanged Skull - Item - World of Warcraft, but wasn't finding the extra dps much help. as an alternative i swappped out wfs for Bauble of True Blood - Item - World of Warcraft as i find the extra mp5 helps me outlast other healer's mana pool on longer matches and the use heal has saved me when healer is los/fear/silence/cc/blind/stun etc and theres someone dispelling my damn hots. any ideas for better survivability trink? not partial to any battlemasterrs atm. tranq shot appears to dispel hots, blessings, fort etc from other player. confirm? also been throwing it at warriors when they try to enrage regenerate. any other key uses. wtb shorteer cd on silencing btw also, been using chimera cd on viper target to speed up heal oom to end match quicker over viper target for damage. thoughts? is scorpid > chimera > serpent been helpful to anyone to pull a melee off a heals when scatter/arrow are on cd for anyone else? btw if no one has mentioned it and its not obvious scatter > freezing is perfect escape even when trink is up. btw freezing arrow is worth using just try dropping it on say, the healer or other caster instead of trying to hit the melee w/ it. i have arrow and trap both on bar so i can easily iceblock melee i'm kiting or cc the caster. been using viper > chimera > silence > tranq then dps burn with cc to escape or keep heals from healing most fights we usually don't win in first minute unless other team doesn't use resil gear. random thought: how do ppl in pve gear get to the 1200-1300 bracket anyway? they die in 3 hits each as plate....
  12. Thread of Ultimate Stupidity

btw good to note hunters can beat melee that outgear them on rotface by proper positioning even with disease multiple times or at least coming close. meter site lost parse where i beat the mut rogue and fury warr using shadow's edge and dbw, but heres one where other hunter took close 2nd WoW Meters Online - Combatlog Replay since rotface's hitbox is small as marrow's is large i can actually stand close enough to not move for ooze flood. after that its a simple case of saving instants for movement and lining up cd with proc etc. note i try to stand away from the main pile (his hip is nice) so i minimize rng making me move for slime spray. to modify for heroic i just stand slightly further out at border between 2 ooze quadrants so i can get out of flood in a global or less while still providing range to keep gas away from other raiders. only downside is large ooze will get kited almost through you so u might have to move if you don't trust heals to keep u up for the 2-3 ticks youll take as it goes by. btw i've also kited the large ooze successfully when offtank was lost due to healer dc using distracting on cd, concussive and frost trap to stay out of aoe range, burning all instants to maintain threat. i know plague has been out awhile but still see alot of dead hunters or bottom of meters for this fight. btw run with rot during unstable ooze explosion to keep range for dps (shouldn't need to be said but we've got rep for most idiotic class) on a side note i outdps myself using this strat on rot compared to best festergut parse(even when i was meeting point for spores w/ hysteria) and in fact every fight but bql (even unbitten) any ideas why?
  13. Thread of Ultimate Stupidity

Here's a question that came to me after some thought: Since Armor pen is an effective stat for our physical damage (auto, steady, and aimed) is it worth getting any spell pen for our non-physical damage (serpent sting, chimera, arcane, and volley)?
  14. Thread of Ultimate Stupidity

Here's a question that came to me only after much thought: Since a large part of a MM hunter's damage comes from Serpent Sting and Chimera Shot, would a few points of Spell Pen benefit those shots similarly to Armor Pen benefiting Auto, Steady, and Aimed?
