Everyone,

We have been working hard to upgrade the forums and get off the falling apart software we're currently running on. The new forum will be run on Invision Power Board and it's much much faster with better technologies and a generally better user experience.

This thread will try and update to as many changes as possible along the way.

Membership
All your username, passwords, (And hopefully avatars) will be copied along the way. So just LOGIN with your existing account information. In addition to logging in as normal you can also login with your facebook account and link to your account so you can be lazy and stay logged in all the time, or spam your wall with how awesome your posts are. The facebook option is entirely optional so if you don't choose to use it you'll only see the smallest little "F" icon in the corner of the website.

We are pruning about 400,000 dead accounts. If you haven't logged in for over a year and have never made a single post then your account will be deleted. You'll be free to signup with the same email and IP address as before.

Some WOW information might be missing from your user profile. We are going to simplify the Armory System and add an automated Armory badge to wow accounts. This might take a small bit of time after the conversion.

Subscriptions
You must absolutely cancel any subscriptions you have by Paypal. We will have to manually apply existing subscriptions to the new board and you'll have to re-sign up once that subscription expires. IF YOU DO NOT CANCEL your payment, we cannot refund them. They are setup to go to an employee who is no longer with us who WILL NOT refund any subscriptions you setup. If you forget and are charged, you will have to file a Paypal Dispute against him. Make sure your payments are only going to [email protected]

Links
We have created a system that will take all existing links and convert them into the new forum links. There are limitations with this system though.

  • "Anchor Links", or links to a specific post within a thread or topic will forward to the top of that thread or topic instead. This is a limitation of how anchor links work. They are used by your browser and not the server, so the server cannot detect them to forward with the new url.
  • Only links to topics, threads, announcements, and polls will work. If you try to bookmark your USERCP or something like that, you'll have to manually recreate the new bookmark.
  • Shortcuts like "/f30/" currently don't work, you will actually have to go to /showforum?id=30 or something like that. We are working on a remedy for the lazy. It really shouldn't be a problem though bceause your browser should offer to complete the url you're manually typing in anyways... so you shouldn't even have to get past "elitistj" before it offers to complete the full url.

Search
The new site has an easier to use AJAX based search system to find members, posts, forums, or even help topics. Enjoy :D.

Design
The design is staying pretty much the same. Similar colors and graphics, but with an easier to use layout. The design offers a "Latest Posts" section as well as a whole page to allow you to "View New Content" that you haven't read, and is super easy to sort by time periods and types.

Let me know if you have any questions, but please keep the thread on topic.

Just to reiterate on a few things. The site is being upgraded to faster, newer, better software that can be maintained better. The current software is a grossly out of date and vulnerable version of vbull.

There is no change up going on with forum being made public. The number of people who think the BB is being opened up for public viewing are grossly mistaken. It will be remaining private and unsearchable and memberships are not changing either. More information on that here: Elitist Jerks - Announcements in Forum : Public Discussion

We're hoping with the new site software that everything is going to be smooth sailing once again. Whether or not that encourages anyone to actually come back, well that is up to you. We still want to see EJ succeed and not be diminished to a wasteland.

Also, we are no longer deleting posts. This is getting obnoxious. Every time we delete posts, we have to start the forum upgrade over again.

Your posts are no less private than they were months ago. In fact, they will be more private now that people can't buy their way into BB anymore. The only members who will have access to BB are the ones who've always had access.

We cannot delete the site import and start it over every single time someone wants to remove posts. That will just have to wait until the upgrade is complete. If you still want your posts removed after the upgrade, it will be revisited then.

We cannot reiterate enough though how silly it is to remove posts out of irrational fear of something that's not going to happen. TTH has run this site for over a year, it was on their servers well before the tech issues too. The tech issues didn't bring anything to light about some magic change-up in things. They were just that, tech issues. If site upgrade goes according to plan, you should be rest assured the site will remain the trusted site it has always been and hopefully with less crappy slowness or other glitches that have hindered the user experience the last few weeks.

Seems like all formatting is completely broken, just look at the first two posts of this topic to see it.

Refresh. Fine now. We're sort of working on guide author issues and live updating the site so things like that may happen very briefly. We make a point to do this at like 3-4am though and it's quickly corrected. You may see some more quirks in next hour or so too but those too will pass as we're testing code changes.

Will there no longer be links to the posters armory (used to be under their avatar) or is that just something that isn't implemented yet?

Unless I'm blind, there's some fields from the old user profiles that got converted to the new engine but can't be modified anywhere. "Occupation" is an example.

Working on some of that now.

EDIT:

All of the custom fields are now properly enabled for members. They were flagged admin only so we honesty just overlooked it because they worked for us. No one had reported it until now. That part was a quick fix. Updating 375 realms by hands because new forum software requires entries to be numbered, a royal pain. All fixed though.

The software still imported everything at wrong values though so pretty much entire wow profile will need fixing for all users. :\

Seems like I can now edit my member title. I think I couldn't do that in the old forum - at least I didn't pick the current one. Intended?

The new forum software doesn't allow title editing as a GROUP permission. On new forum it's based on post count. On old board it was a feature of being a patron. Since it can't be set by group, the feature had to be given to everyone with a post count > 50, to make sure most patrons kept access to it. So it's just an unavoidable change.

This link from the main page is from the Benefactors Forum, which is labelled "Herein lies an off-topic forum reserved for use by Elitist Jerks donors only. Access to these discussions is part of the perks bestowed upon forum Benefactors and Patrons."

Think of it as a chance to educate and get your dick wet at the same time.
